Update your computer's drivers using DriverMax, the free driver update tool - USB Universal Serial Bus - (Controller host USB standard) - Controller host USB OpenHCD Standard Computer Driver Updates. In the Windows 7 guest operating system, you will see that Windows couldn't automatically install the driver for the used USB bus controller since it doesn't support it by default. In the device manager, this 'Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller' will appear with a yellow icon as there is no driver for this device. A yellow exclamation mark next to Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller means the device driver is not installed correctly. In that case, some of your USB devices may not be recognized by PC. There are three ways to fix this issue. Read on to find the details about each way. Apply to Windows 10, 7, 8 & 8.1.
I am running a Windows XP guest on a Windows 7 host via VirtualBox.
I want to use a USB scanner on the Windows XP guest. I will not be using the scanner on the Windows 7 host itself.
The question is whether to install a driver on the Windows 7 host for the scanner, so that I don't keep getting the annoying device driver software was not successfully installed silliness when not running the Windows XP guest.
Will installing a driver on the host affect Virtual Box's ability to reliably claim the scanner for the guest when it needs it?

Due to lack of answers I have done my own extensive testing.
gronostaj is correct that drivers are not required on the host in order to use them in a Virtual Machine. However that didn't quite answer the question.
My testing has confirmed that you can install USB device drivers on the Host, and doing so does not prevent VirtualBox from being able to claim the devices when needed. I tested:
- Canon 9000F Scanner
- Logitech C170 Webcam
- Logitech F310 Gamepad
- Roland UA-1G Audio Interface
- Brother HL-2250DN Printer
For each device above I installed drivers on the Host. I then created a Virtual Machine and asked VirtualBox to connect each device to that Virtual Machine. VirtualBox had no trouble claiming the devices.

No drivers are needed on the host.

Actually, VirtualBox has to load its own driver for a device to be able to 'connect it' to virtual machine. This driver works with any USB device.
I am 100% positive about this. I have once used an old scanner in a Windows XP guest, even though no drivers were available for Windows 7 host or even for x64 systems.

I am experimenting with VMWare Fusion 1.1.1 (72241) and looking into switching from Parallels.
I am using a brand new iMac 24' with Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz with 2GB Ram running OSX10.5.2. The guest OS is Vista Business.
I have converted my virtual machine with the converter and installed VMWare Tools. Most things appear to be working except USB. In my device manager (see attachment) there are two entries called 'Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller' and one called 'Unknown Device' all with the yellow '!' icons on them. Double clicking on the USB controllers the status in the dialog says:
'The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)
To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver.'
The unknown device says
'The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)
There is no driver selected for the device information set or element.
To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver.'
Does anyone have any suggestions about what I can try. If I tell windows to try and find drivers it fails and asks me for the disk that came with the hardware.
